Neoscan Software

All-in-One Micro-CT Control, Reconstruction & Advanced Image Analysis

NeoScan Software is a powerful, fully integrated software environment developed in-house to control NeoScan micro-CT and nano-CT systems and to handle the complete workflow from data acquisition to advanced 3D analysis. Designed for scientists and engineers who demand both performance and usability, the software unites scanner control, reconstruction, visualization, image processing and quantitative analysis into a single, intuitive platform.

From the moment the sample is placed inside the scanner to the final numerical results, NeoScan Software guides the user through every step in a clear and efficient workflow. Its ribbon-based interface enables rapid familiarization, allowing both experienced users and newcomers to operate the system productively from the first day.

Seamless Workflow: From Scan to Results

NeoScan Software manages the entire scanning process, starting with communication and system control of the micro-CT scanner. Users can easily configure X-ray source parameters, select energy and filtration manually or automatically, and launch scans with minimal interaction. Flexible file handling allows manual naming or fully automated batch acquisition, making the software ideal for routine studies, series measurements and comparative research.

Once data acquisition is completed, the software transitions smoothly to reconstruction. Projection images are reconstructed into high-quality virtual slices and full 3D volumes using a wide range of adjustable parameters, including misalignment correction, beam hardening correction, smoothing and artifact reduction. Partial scans can be merged seamlessly into a single volume, enabling reconstruction of long or wide samples that exceed the camera’s field of view. All reconstructed data can be saved in standard image formats such as TIFF, BMP, JPEG and PNG, ensuring full compatibility with third-party software.

Advanced 2D & 3D Visualization

NeoScan Software provides powerful visualization tools for intuitive inspection of the internal structure of scanned objects. Users can explore data slice-by-slice, navigate through three orthogonal virtual slices at any position, or generate realistic 3D volume renderings that reveal both external shape and internal microarchitecture.

Volume rendering includes flexible color and transparency transfer functions, allowing different materials and density ranges to be highlighted with precision. Integrated lighting controls introduce realistic illumination, reflections and scattering, enhancing spatial perception and making complex microstructures easy to understand. Virtual cutting tools allow non-destructive sectioning of samples, while built-in movie creation enables dynamic fly-throughs and rotations, saved as high-quality MP4 files for presentations and publications.

Image Processing & Quantitative Analysis in 2D and 3D

The Processing module offers a comprehensive toolbox for image enhancement, segmentation and numerical analysis. Reconstructed volumes can be improved using denoising, smoothing or sharpening filters, followed by flexible segmentation to isolate pores, particles or phases of interest. Volumes of Interest (VOIs) can be defined intuitively using geometric shapes or freehand drawing across multiple slices, with automatic interpolation between slices.

Advanced morphological operations and GPU-accelerated analysis enable fast extraction of quantitative parameters such as porosity, size distribution, area, perimeter, roundness and local thickness. Both 2D and 3D analyses produce color-coded visualizations and detailed numerical reports, supporting data-driven research and quality control.

The software also includes specialized tools such as fiber orientation analysis, capable of determining local fiber directions without prior binarization, and surface rendering with STL export for use in 3D printing or external CAD and simulation software.

Built for Productivity, Compatibility and Long-Term Use

NeoScan Software supports batch processing workflows, allowing repeated analysis routines to be applied automatically to large datasets. All intermediate and final results are stored in standard file formats, ensuring transparent data handling and long-term accessibility.

As part of NeoScan’s philosophy, the software receives continuous enhancements and feature expansions, providing users with a future-proof solution that evolves alongside their research needs.
